January 2006
The first Pottery Expo at Gapsted will take place on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th March 2006. It will be advertised to the public from 10am – 5.30pm. It will be held at the Victorian Alps Winery at Gapsted next to the winery’s tasting and sales area. The winery has agreed to supply a full marque in case of bad weather, has organised music and gourmet food stalls. The long weekend is a busy time in the north east and the winery is well situated on the snow road and Great Alpine road.
The following are the guidelines for the Expo as expressed last year. It seems that every year we need to put in a little more effort to maintain our profile and retain our integrity. It’s tough making a living from ceramics and we hope that by showing the best we can do, and how we do it, will help with the promotion of ceramics to the wider public and ideally translate into increased sales and a viable career.
As you are aware, the aim of the Pottery Expo is to maintain a high profile of quality studio ceramics.
- We aim to promote ceramics to the wider public by exhibiting in a public space, with free and open entry.
- Educate our clientele by promoting access to the maker, available for information. Ceramic artists ready and willing to talk to customers.
- Demonstrations, Clayworks –info, the public can observe the making processes.
- The Expo is a celebration of ceramics, a festival for the family, enhanced by live music, food and activities.
- The Expo is an outdoor exhibition with prices to reflect quality and enable viability of the potter. This is not a market. Not a chance to clean out the studio. This is an opportunity to showcase the best Australian ceramic artists can offer. We all suffer if potters sell their work too cheaply. We need to be united to help build up the appreciation of quality ceramics by engaging our buyers, talk to them about the work and ask fair prices without undermining the galleries who support us.
